Churches
in Ghana will resist any attempt to legalise homosexuality in the
country, a Senior Pastor of Calvary Grace Chapel of the Assemblies of
God Church, Ghana at La, Reverend George K.K. Abaidoo, has said.
He said he supported calls by a section of the public on President John Mahama to come out and state his position on the issue. Rev
Abaidoo, said this in an interview with The Ghanaian Times in Accra on
Monday after the opening of the International Pastors’ and Ministers’
Conference (IPMC) and said homosexuality was unscriptural and an affront
to the Ghanaian society and cultures.
The five-day IPMC 2015 on
the theme “Kingdom Advancement; Accelerating the Great Commission,” is
being attended by more than 1200 persons across the world including the
USA, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Uganda.
It is being organised
by Faith Fellowship Ministries World Outreach Centre of the USA, in
partnership Calvary Rescue Mission Ghana, Ghana Without Orphans, Ghana
Evangelical Mission and Ghana Evangelical Mission Association.
Rev
Abaidoo stressed that homosexuality should be frowned upon because it
was inimical to the physical and spiritual growth of an individual.
“Even
animals do not mate with their same sex counterparts and why will
humans decide to sleep with their same sex counterpart?” he queried.
The
Minister argued that even though homosexuality was practised by some
individuals or could be found in the Ghanaian society, the social ill
should not be given a legal assent.
Asked, whether, he supported
the call by a section of the society for the President to state his
position on the matter, Rev Abaidoo responded in the affirmative.
Rev
Abaidoo pointed out that homosexuality had a spiritual dimension and
the church would pray for those engaged in it, saying the practice could
not be fought on the “physical aspect alone.”
“The church will
continue to pray for those engaged in homosexuality and educate them on
the need to refrain from the practice,” he said.
President Barack
Obama assented to homosexuality in America, after the Supreme Court had
approved of the practice. Consequently, it is now legal for individuals
of the same sex in America to marry.
Rev Abaidoo, who is the
Chairman of the Planning Committee of the IPMC, said in view of the
threat of homosexuality, this year’s conference would focus on children
and emphasised the need for children to be brought up in a Godly manner
so that they would refrain from social ills such as homosexuality.
Topics
to be discussed at the conference, according to Rev Abaidoo included
Child development, The role of the church in community development,
Conflict resolution, Care for orphans, and The role the church in
Africa.
