The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the government will head to the
negotiation table today after the aggrieved doctors called off their
strike last Friday.
The doctors, who ceased seeing to emergency and OPD cases for three
weeks, are demanding codified conditions of service – a package they
have been fighting for in decades.
Ghana’s Employment and Labour Relations Minister Haruna Iddrisu is
optimistic once negotiations are reopened today, per the directive of
the National Labour Commission, a deal with the GMA is likely to be
clinched by the end of October.
Speaking to the media over the weekend, the former communications
minister revealed the John Mahama government and the GMA had already
negotiated four out of 12 of their proposed conditions of service.
He has also assured that the doctors will be paid their August
salaries despite the three-week strike. The move is part of concessions
government is making to the doctors.
