THE
DEPUTY Majority Leader in Parliament, Alfred Kwame Agbesi’s plans of
retaining his position as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ashaiman
Constituency has started hitting rock as three other aspirants,
including the former MCE of Ashaiman have picked their nomination forms
to contest him in the forthcoming NDC primaries.
Lawyer Emmanuel
Kumadey alias Lawyer Akukor, Mr. Ernest Henry Norgbey, a businessman
and former Youth Organiser, Numo Addinortey Addison, former Municipal
Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman have already picked their forms and
are battle-ready to unseat the incumbent MP.
Hon. Agbesi,
somewhere last year, told a section of the media and some party
executives at the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) that he would not
contest the 2016 elections to give the youth the chance to enter
parliament but he recently made a u-turn declaring his intention to
contest in a press conference before picking his forms.
He was
the first aspirant to pick his form at the NDC Constituency office in
Ashaiman, followed by lawyer Akukor, Ernest and Mr. Addison in that
order.
Information gathered by the DAILY GUIDE indicated that
even before the opening of nominations by the party, Hon. Agbesi had
been moving from electoral area to electoral in the Ashaiman
constituency wooing delegates with big offers to vote for him.
But the other aspirants claimed they are ready to face him and unseat him.
The
Ashaiman Constituency seat which is currently held by Hon. Agbesi is
one of the safe seats that has been held by the ruling NDC since 1992.
The
seat was won by Franklin Winfred K Aheto of the NDC in 1992, he held
onto it until Hon Emmanuel K. K. Teye of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)
took it over in 2000 when Hon. Agbesi then went independent.
Hon. Alfred Kwame Agbesi took the seat back for the NDC in the 2004 elections and has held onto it till date.
Lawyer
Akukor, one of the aspirants told DAILY GUIDE after picking his
nomination forms that he has to succumb to numerous requests from his
constituents and some big men in the constituency who believed he has a
lot to offer the constituency.
He said “Ashaiman deserves better
as the third largest voter for the NDC in the country. Hon. Agbesi is a
Deputy Majority in Parliament, we can only give him that respect but am
more competent to do the work more than what he did. The motor is lawyer
go lawyer come.”
Lawyer Akukor looks like one of the aspirants who is likely to cause a huge upset on the scene in the Ashaiman constituency.
